Hello, and happy Hanukkah,
I am currently living in Switzerland, in a city with about 4,000 Jews. I came here about three years ago with a one-month-old baby, and we really suffered, as newcomers to the community, from the inability to go outside on the Sabbath. I admit that a number of times we broke down and went out with the child on the Sabbath. In addition, I attend synagogue every Sabbath and notice that 80 percent of the worshippers carry, mainly because of difficulties connected with children.
I am planning to return to Israel this coming summer, and before then I have taken on a project to establish an eruv here. I recruited a few locals who are interested, and I drew some maps, but I am having trouble finding a courageous authority willing to examine the issues that come up in a way that will not immediately shut the project down. I think a kosher eruv that relies on lenient opinions in the spirit of the Talmudic text (“the Jewish law follows the lenient view in the laws of eruvin”) is preferable to a situation in which 80% of the community is definitely carrying.
No one here disputes defining the city as a karmelit and not a public domain—there are not 600,000 people in the city.
The main problems are around defining the boundaries of the eruv:
1- If one determines that one boundary is a river or a lake—what is the proper way to relate to bridges that pass over them? Must all of them be closed off with a doorway form? That makes it almost impossible.
2- How can one make use of the surrounding mountains?
3- In order to create a doorway form, can one use the city tram cable network even if sometimes there are many cables, so that they do not create a clean doorway shape but instead pass over the roads in many branches?
4- What is the maximum size of passageways that I can leave open in the eruv without disqualifying it?
5- How often does the eruv need to be checked after it is set up?
And there are more questions that come up every time we try to move forward…
After that, there is already a route for leasing usage rights from the local authorities and then publishing the precise map in the community.
