Q&A: The Laws of the Gentiles
The Laws of the Gentiles
Question
Hello Rabbi,
I’m interested in studying in depth the topic of “the customs of the Gentiles.” I would be very glad if the Rabbi could direct me to sources on the subject, both medieval authorities (Rishonim) and later authorities (Acharonim). And if the Rabbi has written anything about it—then of course I’d want to read it.
I have no words to express my gratitude for all the books, the wonderful website, and the responsa—many thanks!
Answer
Many thanks.
I would start with the Shulchan Arukh, Yoreh De’ah, section 178, and Maimonides’ Laws of Idolatry, and from there go back to the sources in the Talmud and the medieval authorities (Rishonim). Then go back again to the commentaries and the responsa that deal with the topic (I’m sure sources like that can be found with an online search, even on Wikipedia).
Thank you!
