Q&A: Fish from a Store Without Kosher Certification
Fish from a Store Without Kosher Certification
Question
Hello Rabbi,
Recently I discovered a fish store supervised by “Hai Bari,” but the store itself does not have kosher certification. It’s an online store called Oceangal 61. I sent them an email regarding their kosher status, and this was their reply:
The fish from the Kinneret are kosher according to Jewish law, having fins and scales.
In addition, the fisherman does not take the fishing boat out on Sabbaths and holidays.
The fish are cleaned of their innards and scales. If there is a halakhic concern about a prohibition against eating the fish after its scales have been removed, it is also possible not to descale the fish at the customer’s request. We do not sell seafood.
Is it permitted to buy filleted fish through them (that is, where the store cuts and cleans the fish into fillets)?
Best regards,
Answer
Assuming the fish are indeed kosher species, I do not see a problem.
There could also be an issue of worms.
