Q&A: The Concept of “Taking Upon Itself” with Regard to a Group
The Concept of “Taking Upon Itself” with Regard to a Group
Question
Hello Rabbi,
The concept of “taking upon oneself” with regard to an individual, is fairly clear. We have all experienced this. But what does it mean for a group to have taken something upon itself? In what ways is a group’s acceptance similar to the acceptance of an individual?
I wanted to know how you define the concept of “taking upon oneself” with regard to a group.
What is the criterion for knowing whether a certain group has accepted a norm upon itself? (a percentage of the individuals in the group who accepted it upon themselves, acceptance by individuals who represent the group, something else…)
My questions:
1- What is your definition of the concept of “taking upon itself” with regard to a group in your view?
2- What are the shared features between acceptance by a group and acceptance by an individual?
