Q&A: A Strange Death
A Strange Death
Question
In certain holy communities it is customary to curse / revile someone by saying that he should die a strange death.
Sorry for the strange question, but it really bothers me.
For decades now I’ve been walking around with this question, and thank God I finally girded my loins like a man with strength and courage to ask it:
To die young is obviously a curse, understood.
To die with suffering is obviously a curse, understood.
But a strange death or a “standard” one—what difference does it make?
True, specifically for me there is a downside if I die a strange death,
because it would make my many enemies happy.
But someone who doesn’t have as many enemies as I do, really in heaps—what difference would it make to him whether he dies a “standard” death or a strange one?
Answer
You’d have to ask the people doing the cursing what exactly they mean. Alternatively, maybe they aren’t cursing you at all but blessing you. But conceptually, “a strange death” is used to mean an unusual kind of death that involves suffering.
