Q&A: Why believe in Judaism, in its current version or at all?
Why believe in Judaism, in its current version or at all?
Question
Hello Rabbi, this is someone who used to be religious.
I’ve been following you for quite a while and reading your columns on the site.
I understood your arguments in favor of belief in God. After a period of several years in which I held a pragmatic belief in God (Moshe Koppel’s version), I understood thanks to you that it really isn’t so pragmatic to believe in something just because it’s pragmatic, because you always live with the feeling that you’re kind of fooling yourself a bit (and that itself is not a good feeling). And I think your arguments about God are very good and satisfying (about intuition, “the eyes of the intellect,” and the like).
But I haven’t found any argument for Judaism or for religiosity. Could you perhaps direct me to the relevant column?
And unrelatedly, after spending some time reading your site, I felt the need to express my appreciation for your wonderful website. Too bad I didn’t discover you earlier.
Thank you!
Answer
Hello.
In my book The First Being, in the fifth conversation, I deal with this. The first four deal with proofs for the existence of God.
