Q&A: His Blessed Unity
His Blessed Unity
Question
I asked the Rabbi about God's free choice as an unmoved mover, and the Rabbi answered that free choice does not arise from a prior cause, so there is no problem.
My next question concerns God's unity, which is also an important principle in monotheism—that God is absolutely simple. When I waver between two alternatives, this involves two different powers (I cannot both want X and not want it), which means that there is not really a single "me," nor unity within me. So the question is: how can we preserve the principle of unity if God can choose between two alternatives?
Answer
You assume that two powers are required. But one can certainly speak of a single being deliberating between two possibilities. Beyond that, I do not know where this notion comes from that He is uniform and unitary. I am not even sure that it has a clear meaning.
