The Rule of Fixed Presence
Question
Hello Rabbi,
Is there any logical / modern mathematical explanation for the rule “anything fixed is treated as half-and-half” that appears in the Talmud?
As is well known, the Talmud in Yoma 84b decides on the basis of this rule questions involving life-and-death law—whether to clear away the rubble in a case where a collapse fell on a group of Jews and gentiles when the majority are gentiles (in the case where some of them had separated; see there).
Seemingly there ought to be some internal logic to it.
