Q&A: Postponing Problems
Postponing Problems
Question
Hello Rabbi,
I know you’re not a security expert or anything like that, but I’m wondering whether you share my feeling that we are champions at postponing the problems in our country from a security standpoint.
The nuclear program was significantly delayed, and that’s nice, but it was only delayed. With Gaza we went through many rounds of fighting and always only did part of what was needed, and in the end we got October 7. Don’t you think there’s a very bad pattern here?? In the end, maybe Iran will also succeed.
Do you have an opinion on the subject?
Answer
This is a general human tendency. In our case, there are much more striking examples of this phenomenon. For example, the peace with Egypt, which was made in order to buy time, even though there is a good chance that we will pay a heavy price for it in the future, because there is no real peace there and the people are very hostile toward us. The same applies to Jordan.
There is a claim that, in any case, there is no way to solve such problems completely, and therefore all that can be done is to buy time. One just has to make sure that we are postponing the problem and not entering a situation that in the future will be impossible to solve.
