Recommendation for studying citizenship

שו"תRecommendation for studying citizenship
שאל לפני 2 שנים

I am a Haredi Jew. In the past, I have pondered the issue of conscription a lot and have built up various justifications for not enlisting. Following recent events, I am beginning to realize that my view of the whole issue was theoretical and detached, from the perspective of a private individual in an ideal situation – would it be better to invest time and energy in studying Torah or in defending the people? I am beginning to realize that I lack basic foundations in what is called "citizenship" and in understanding that if there is no army, we are all lost, and that if many evade, there will be no army (and in any case, there will be no moral obligation, etc.). I suppose that graduates of state education are taught these things like a glove, but what can I do – I did not study or was not educated about it. Can you recommend how to supplement information in this area? How to give myself a basic course (if possible – with all the "learners") in civics?

I don't think courses are necessary. You just need to think a little, that's all. The obligation to take part in the burden is not an exception in civics studies, but a fundamental moral principle that should be understood by everyone. By the way, this does not mean that everyone should be drafted. A certain number of students can be allowed to be exempt from conscription. In a reasonable dose and with public consent.
