על סלובודקה ופוניבז'
Regarding your shiur this morning at Ohel Ari:
When I learn, for example, the parasha hashavua, I read a pasuk, then ask myself what is the Torah trying to tell me. I start with a clean slate, a Tabula Rasa. Only afterwards do I look at Rashi, Ramban, Ibn Ezra, etc. With this method I have been able to come up with many Chidushim.
I do this with Talmud as well. I frequently argue with the Amoraim.
If I read the commentators first, my mind would be lead in a certain direction and I very well would not come up with original thinking.
